Time to say good-bye

Ugh! Being a grown up isn't always fun...or at least this is how I felt this past week. Simon developed a bone tumor on his jaw during the Thanksgiving break which took us by surprise especially since we lost Schuster six months ago. The Vet told us that there wasn't anything that we could do given Simon's age -- 17 years/119 dog years -- so we needed to make him comfortable (pain medicine and anitibotics). Well, selfishly we didn't want to let him go so we have held on for weeks, but Friday we decided given his condition that we would say good-bye. It's hard to imagine that he won't be under our feet in the kitchen, remind us that it's time to eat with his gentle bark, peeeee on the floor :-), remind me to turn up the heat because he is shivering, and snuggle next to me at night because he misses Schuster (tears strolling down my cheek). He has traveled from coast to coast with us been a great addition to our lives. He will be missed dearly.
On Friday before Jimmy took Simon to the Vet we told Sydney that Simon would be joining Schuster in "doggie heaven". She responded with "Daddy, you know that I didn't get to say good-bye to Schuster, so do you think I could go with you to the "doggie heaven" place to say good-bye?" Never doubt the innocence of a child. In the midst of our tears we told her "no" which of course wasn't satisfying for her, but we managed over time to explain the it's a bit more complicated than this...Ugh.
